A large pool along the pothole trail of Canyonlands National Park's Needles District. Desert life thrives in unlikely places. Many creatures rely on these pools to drink from, and others live out their entire lives in the days or weeks after a storm. Tadpole and fairy shrimp lay eggs that can withstand drought conditions in a process called cryptobiosis, withstanding a loss of up to 92% of liquids. When rain falls again, the eggs 'rehydrate' and hatch to live out their lives in the newly formed pool.
